Skoda Auto and Volkswagen are targeting launching hybrid midsize SUVs and sedans in India by 2028, utilising their new IMP21 platform—a localised evolution of the CMP architecture capable of supporting ICE, strong-hybrid, and EV powertrains (“strong hybrid” means non‑plug‑in).
The IMP21, or India Main Platform, allows flexibility to scale and localise hybrid options in sync with India's rising fuel-efficiency regulations and consumer demand. Expected models include next-gen versions of the Skoda Kushaq, Slavia, VW Taigun, and Virtus, aiming to compete with offerings like the Hyundai-Kia Creta, Renault Duster, and Honda City e:HEV.
This hybrid shift is part of broader Volkswagen Group efforts in India to meet CAFE 3 emission norms and diversify powertrain options. Earlier on, Skoda’s global CEO, Klaus Zellmer, had confirmed plans for mild, strong, and plug-in hybrid vehicles in India, complementing future EV rollouts.
While hybrids are the immediate focus, VW Group continues its EV push—planning over 70 new electric models globally by 2028 on platforms like MEB and SSP—signaling a parallel long-term electrification strategy.
